New Jersey Partner Chris Martin recently presented to northern New Jersey Tax Assessors as part of their continuing education requirements in the area of Tax Court e-filing procedures and recent Tax Court decisions. The volume of filings in the Tax Court is substantial, moreover, every municipality in the state must perform a revaluation of every property once every ten years. Challenges to the assessments result in enormous litigation, particularly in terms of commercial properties involving large shopping malls, office complexes, trucking facilities, oil storage facilities and casinos. The e-filing process and related ability to easily view the entire court jacket and discovery has already made Tax Court litigation management more uniform and expeditious. Chris’s role in obtaining important decisions by the trial and appellate courts that support the position of the Assessors in these areas was noted.
