Soraya is a partner in the New York office of Morrison Mahoney, where her primary concentration is investigating and litigating fraudulent insurance claims and general litigation. She is an experienced civil defense attorney who has practiced at both the trial and appellate levels in various jurisdictions. Having represented the nation’s top insurance companies against no-fault claims and prosecuting affirmative recovery litigation in state court, Soraya’s expertise includes counseling healthcare insurers on fraud prevention, conducting examinations under oath, managing all phases of discovery, trial preparation and regularly represents her clients in intricate arbitration proceedings. She has successfully argued complex summary judgment motions, procured significant discovery rulings, dismissals before trial, and favorable trial verdicts.
Soraya began her legal career in the public sector as an Assistant District Attorney with the Queens County District Attorney's Office, where she prosecuted misdemeanor and felony cases for over five years. Within her first year of being in the office, she was promoted to the Special Victims Grand Jury and presented complex felony cases, some of which involved child witnesses. She quickly ascended to the Narcotics Trials Division and the prominent Special Victims/Domestic Violence Bureau within three years of being in the office. She gained invaluable experience in investigating and trying a wide range of felonies criminal cases, including felony assault, robbery, rape, sexual abuse, and drug possession, among others, to verdict. During her tenure at the District Attorney’s Office she had the privilege of assisting with securing convictions on some of the City’s most high profile cases.
Subsequent to the District Attorney’s office, she turned her focus on civil litigation as a real estate litigation attorney. Her practice consisted of commercial and residential leasing and ownership, assignment and sublet provisions, termination rights, and other prominent lease interpretation issues.
Soraya has also been involved in pro bono work, volunteering her services to the underrepresented, in particular, indigenous communities in Haiti. Through the course of her career she has had the honor of serving on the Permanent Judicial Commission on Justice for Children, co-chaired by the late Honorable Court of Appeals Chief Justice Judith Kaye, where she assisted with the implementation of the New York Early Intervention Act (NYEIS).
Soraya has lectured on anti-gun violence, drug and gang awareness education, as well as on domestic violation issues. She also served as a member of the Nassau County Judicial Screening Board for four consecutive years, where she provided invaluable judgment on potential judicial candidates.
